The reading room
Read beyond the answer
Short KJV reading guides connect crossword answers with the passages, people and images around them.
Let a solved word lead somewhere
Finding the right letters is a beginning. These guides invite you to read the sentence around an answer, notice the speaker and setting, and explain what you have found in your own words. They are available without signing in, completing a puzzle or making a payment.
Each guide separates KJV quotations from our commentary. Read the passage first, compare our observations with its words, then try the questions. You do not need to agree with every reflection to benefit from careful reading.
Choose a reading exercise
Reading KJV clues uses a lamp, a light and two different arks to practise matching a clue with its reference. It also offers a way to approach unfamiliar wording without guessing from memory alone.
Ruth and gleaning follows work in a field into a conversation at home. Notice the actions of Ruth, Boaz and Naomi, and compare the account with the provision for gleaning in Leviticus.
Psalm 23 follows the poem's movement from a shepherd and paths to a table and a dwelling place. Read for changes in image and address, then choose one detail to remember.
A simple habit to keep
After your next crossword, save one word with its verse. Later, recall what the word was doing in that passage before looking again. Keep the reference beside the memory.
